An experimental plugin to preview and insert block patterns in WordPress.

Overview

Block Pattern Explorer

Block Pattern Explorer

The Block Pattern Explorer is an experimental WordPress plugin based heavily on the work currently being done in Gutenberg.

The purpose of this project is to isolate the pattern explorer into a standalone plugin that WordPress users/developers can interact with immediately, provide feedback on, and begin implementing into their own websites. Ideally, this initiative will also help inform the direction of core development.

Once the pattern explorer is fully integrated into WordPress proper, this project will be sunsetted in favor of the core offering. Below is a list of current pull requests that are related to the Block Pattern Explorer in Gutenberg.

Requirements

  • WordPress 5.8+
  • Gutenberg plugin (Not required if using WordPress 5.9+)
  • PHP 7.1+

Development

  1. Set up a local WordPress development environment, we recommend using Local.
  2. Clone / download this repository into the wp-content/plugins folder.
  3. Navigate to the wp-content/plugins/block-pattern-explorer folder in the command line.
  4. Run npm install to install the plugin's dependencies within a /node_modules/ folder.
  5. Run composer install to install the additional WordPress composer tools within a /vendor/ folder.
  6. Run npm run start to compile and watch source files for changes while developing.

Refer to package.json and composer.json for additional commands.

    Note: if you make any changes to this PR yourself, they will take precedence over the rebase.

    Security

    • Three RSA PKCS#1 v1.5 signature verification issues were reported by Moosa Yahyazadeh ([email protected]).
    • HIGH: Leniency in checking digestAlgorithm structure can lead to signature forgery.
    • HIGH: Failing to check tailing garbage bytes can lead to signature forgery.
    • MEDIUM: Leniency in checking type octet.
      • DigestInfo is not properly checked for proper ASN.1 structure. This can lead to successful verification with signatures that contain invalid structures but a valid digest.
      • CVE ID: CVE-2022-24773
      • GHSA ID: GHSA-2r2c-g63r-vccr

    Fixed

    • [asn1] Add fallback to pretty print invalid UTF8 data.
    • [asn1] fromDer is now more strict and will default to ensuring all input bytes are parsed or throw an error. A new option parseAllBytes can disable this behavior.
      • NOTE: The previous behavior is being changed since it can lead to security issues with crafted inputs. It is possible that code doing custom DER parsing may need to adapt to this new behavior and optional flag.
    • [rsa] Add and use a validator to check for proper structure of parsed ASN.1 RSASSA-PKCS-v1_5 DigestInfo data. Additionally check that the hash algorithm identifier is a known value from RFC 8017 PKCS1-v1-5DigestAlgorithms. An invalid DigestInfo or algorithm identifier will now throw an error.
      • NOTE: The previous lenient behavior is being changed to be more strict since it could lead to security issues with crafted inputs. It is possible that code may have to handle the errors from these stricter checks.

  • Unecessary heavy loading?

    Unecessary heavy loading?

    I was wondering what is going on when the loading indicator is spinning..

    The Modal on 3 first elements pop up almost instantly, but then it takes several seconds to load the rest and when checking the network tab it seems, it is loading the whole Gutenberg editor assets again in the background, despite the editor of course already has been loaded.

    Obviously the at least the first three blocks data and preview images exist because the pop up instantly... So how could I tweak the code to show all the patterns when opening the modal?

  • Changing insertion point to always insert at root block

    Changing insertion point to always insert at root block

    I trying to build a system where all patterns are pre-built as elements that should be inserted at page root level. They are basically top level page rows with content.

    So I would like to always insert elements at BlockRootClient even if user has selected/clicked somewhere deeper inside than one the outermost one rows.

    When the Pattern Explorer modal is open I can run following in the console and it select the insertion point I want:

    const ed = wp.data.select('core/block-editor');
    wp.data.dispatch('core/block-editor').selectBlock( ed.getBlockHierarchyRootClientId( ed.getSelectedBlockClientIds() ) );

    And a selection moved "out" for example: Page > Row > Section > Paragraph --> Page > Row

    But when I tried to hack it to run on a subscribe, like so, the modal closes:

    Not working. Modal closes.

    wp.data.subscribe( () => {
        const PatternModal = document.getElementsByClassName("components-modal__frame block-pattern-explorer__modal is-full-screen")[0];
        //const spinner = document.getElementsByClassName("components-modal__frame block-pattern-explorer__modal is-full-screen .components-spinner")[0]
        const ed = wp.data.select('core/block-editor');
        const numOfParentsBlocks = ed.getBlockParents(ed.getSelectedBlockClientId()).length;
        if(PatternModal && numOfParentsBlocks > 0 ) {
            console.log("Pattern Modal exist! And number of parents is > 1");
            wp.data.dispatch('core/block-editor').selectBlock( ed.getBlockHierarchyRootClientId( ed.getSelectedBlockClientIds() ) );
        }

    });

    I also tried modifying use-insertion-point.js slightly, like so: const selectedBlockClientId = getBlockRootClientId( getSelectedBlockClientId() );

    But got some strange results.

    I clearly don't grasp the principles very well. Could you perhaps point me in the right direction?

    Improve the loading state

    Prior to version 0.3.0, the button that launches the Block Pattern Explorer (BPE) was disabled while pattern category types are fetched from block-pattern-explorer/v1/pattern-category-types. Category types are an enhancement unique to the BPE. On slow sites, this "wait" was noticeable and jarring. We opted to remove the disabled state on the button in 0.3.0 but a better solution is needed.

    Now if the use clicks the button too quickly, the default state of the explorer leaves a lot to be desired.
