Multiple level dropdown works with Bootstrap 5, just like native support.

Overview

Bootstrap 5 Multiple Level Dropdown.

For Bootstrap 4, please visit Bootstrap 4 Multiple Level Dropdown

Using official HTML without adding extra CSS styles and classes, it's just like native support.

All things listed in https://v5.getbootstrap.com/docs/5.0/components/dropdowns/ are not effected. You can use css classes and js methods/events/options freely.

Dropdown of bootstrap can be easily changed to infinite level. It's a pity that they didn't do it.

Usage

Base

Just add js after bootstrap js files:

<script src="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/dallaslu/bootstrap-5-multi-level-dropdown/master/bootstrap5-dropdown-ml-hack.js"></script>

Base Example

...
<div class="dropdown mt-3">
    <button class="btn btn-secondary dropdown-toggle" type="button" id="dropdownMenuButton" data-bs-toggle="dropdown" aria-haspopup="true" aria-expanded="false">
        Dropdown button
    </button>
    <div class="dropdown-menu" aria-labelledby="dropdownMenuButton">
        <a class="dropdown-item" href="#">Action</a>
        <!-- level #2 -->
        <div class="dropdown dropend">
            <a class="dropdown-item dropdown-toggle" href="#" id="dropdown-layouts" data-bs-toggle="dropdown" aria-haspopup="true" aria-expanded="false">Layouts</a>
            <div class="dropdown-menu" aria-labelledby="dropdown-layouts">
                <a class="dropdown-item" href="#">Basic</a>
                <a class="dropdown-item" href="#">Compact Aside</a>
                <div class="dropdown-divider"></div>
                <!-- level #3 -->
                <div class="dropdown dropend">
                    <a class="dropdown-item dropdown-toggle" href="#" id="dropdown-layouts" data-bs-toggle="dropdown" aria-haspopup="true" aria-expanded="false">Custom</a>
                    <div class="dropdown-menu" aria-labelledby="dropdown-layouts">
                        <a class="dropdown-item" href="#">Fullscreen</a>
                        <a class="dropdown-item" href="#">Empty</a>
                        <div class="dropdown-divider"></div>
                        <a class="dropdown-item" href="#">Magic</a>
                    </div>
                </div>
                <!-- /level #3 -->
            </div>
        </div>
        <!-- /level #2 -->
        <a class="dropdown-item" href="#">Something else here</a>
    </div>
</div>
...
<script src="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/dallaslu/bootstrap-5-multi-level-dropdown/master/bootstrap5-dropdown-ml-hack.js"></script>

Hover

If your want a hover tigger, just add class and some custom styles to reduce spacing to avoid triggering mouseleave.

.dropdown-hover-all .dropdown-menu, .dropdown-hover > .dropdown-menu.dropend { margin-left:-1px !important }

or:

<link rel="stylesheet" href="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/dallaslu/bootstrap-5-multi-level-dropdown/master/bootstrap5-dropdown-ml-hack-hover.css" />

Then, add classes for dropdown elements;

<div class="dropdown-hover-all">
  <!-- .dropdown elements -->
</div>
<div class="dropdown dropdown-hover">
  <!-- toggle and menu elements -->
</div>

Hover Example

<link rel="stylesheet" href="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/dallaslu/bootstrap-5-multi-level-dropdown/master/bootstrap5-dropdown-ml-hack-hover.css" />
...
<div class="dropdown-hover-all">
  <!-- .dropdown elements -->
</div>
<div class="dropdown dropdown-hover">
  <!-- toggle and menu elements -->
</div>
...
<script src="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/dallaslu/bootstrap-5-multi-level-dropdown/master/bootstrap5-dropdown-ml-hack.js"></script>

    Issues with v5.0.0-beta2

    Hi,

    Thanks for this nice code. Unfortunately it shows issues on v5.0.0-beta1 and v5.0.0-beta2. If I modify your demo/fiddle to use either of the two beta releases the dropdown from the navbar "Documents" tab stack on-top of etch other instead of folding out to the left as it does with alpha{1,2,3}. Both buttons works as expected however.

  • Not working with dynamically generated multi-level-dropdowns

    Not working with dynamically generated multi-level-dropdowns

    When generating the DOM structure of a multi-level-dropdown with JavaScript, it doesn't work properly. Only the first two levels will open, but not a third one. Also collapsing the second level back by clicking on the first layer entry doesn't work as well. I'm not sure whether this should work, because it kind of does, but not properly.

    Thanks for maybe fixing or enhancing the script in advance!

    Bump engine.io and browser-sync

    Bumps engine.io to 6.2.1 and updates ancestor dependency browser-sync. These dependencies need to be updated together.

    Updates engine.io from 3.5.0 to 6.2.1

    Release notes

    Sourced from engine.io's releases.

    6.2.1

    :warning: This release contains an important security fix :warning:

    A malicious client could send a specially crafted HTTP request, triggering an uncaught exception and killing the Node.js process:

    Error: read ECONNRESET
        at TCP.onStreamRead (internal/stream_base_commons.js:209:20)
    Emitted 'error' event on Socket instance at:
        at emitErrorNT (internal/streams/destroy.js:106:8)

      errno: -104,
      code: 'ECONNRESET',
      syscall: 'read'
    }

    Please upgrade as soon as possible.

    Bug Fixes

    • catch errors when destroying invalid upgrades (#658) (425e833)

    6.2.0

    Features

    • add the "maxPayload" field in the handshake details (088dcb4)

    So that clients in HTTP long-polling can decide how many packets they have to send to stay under the maxHttpBufferSize value.

    This is a backward compatible change which should not mandate a new major revision of the protocol (we stay in v4), as we only add a field in the JSON-encoded handshake data:

    0{"sid":"lv_VI97HAXpY6yYWAAAC","upgrades":["websocket"],"pingInterval":25000,"pingTimeout":5000,"maxPayload":1000000}

    Features

    • decrease the default value of maxHttpBufferSize (58e274c)
