Doblar

Doblar is a fully local image converter that runs in your browser. Doblar is purely client side: nothing is uploaded to a server or anything like that. All conversions take place in your browser, which means your files never leave your computer.

🔒 Secure: Since your files never leave your device, you can use files safely without worrying about unauthorized access to them
📵 Works Offline: Since Doblar is purely client side, we turned Doblar into a PWA, which means you can convert files with Doblar even if you are not connected to the internet! Try it out!

Improvements that could be made

More formats, instead of just images.
Nicer error handling would also be great.
Better accessibility. So far it is very, very bare and I am trying to make an effort to make my projects more accessible to everyone.
More long term: using a smaller WASM build, as the current one is ~18MB, although the support for formats is wide with ImageMagick

What does the name mean?

"doblar" means "to turn" in Spanish

Fix communication failures between SW and main thread in Safari

The main problem at hand was that the BroadcastChannel did not have proper support in Safari.

As a work around, I tried using a polyfill. The polyfill seemed to work, except it didn't. The polyfill worked on the main thread, however since the service worker, being the service worker, loads before all the other requests, this meant the polyfill only got imported after the service worker was loaded.

So I tried to then directly embed the polyfill into the service worker. After some few hiccups with ESBuild, I managed to do so. However Safari did not like how the polyfill used localStorage, and accessing localStorage from a service worker did not work.

Frustrated, I gave up trying to use BroadcastChannel and ended up using the Client API. Needless to say, the refactor was surprisingly smooth thanks to the awesomeness of TypeScript.

So in the end, all worked out. And my love for TypeScript has grown even more :)
