Modren is a modern take on stores like GNOME Software and Discover, which includes support for APT packages, Snaps, Flatpaks from Flathub and DEB files out-of-the-box. It currently only supports Debian-based distributions like Ubuntu, but I'll be adding support for other distros like Fedora and Arch too. I'll also be adding support for makedeb packages. Unlike the other stores, modren does not index the different databases. Instead, you can directly add/publish apps to the store, making it a way for Linux developers to easily publish their apps and make them available for everyone to use.

Do star this repository if you like the idea of Modren!

Name of store Differences
GNOME Software Modren uses Electron unlike GNOME Software, which uses GTK; Modren is much lighter (GNOME Software takes up more than 300MBs res just when launched, while Modren takes up around 100MBs when being used); It has a much easier way to publish apps from inside the store itself, while GNOME Software requires you to get your app added to a repository
KDE Discover similar to GNOME Software
deb-get Modren has a GUI; deb-get supports only debs; app publishing is similar in both but you can directly publish apps from inside the Modren UI, while deb-get requires you to create a pull request in GitHub to create a function for the app in the main script

Super awesome project! Is it dead?

No commits in 6 months. That sucks because this is really great. I'd love to help out in reviving this project. I dont have technical know how but I can help with things like docs, online communities, etc.

  • add deb-get as an backend

    add deb-get as an backend

while true that deb-get has no GUI, i feel like Modren could be a GUI for deb-get~ it has quite a few nice packages available that are currently missing in modren. deb-get can be treated like apt-get in this respect

  • Don't use pkexec for flatpak

    Don't use pkexec for flatpak

Flatpak is executed with pkexec in installation.js line 110 and installation.js line 119. This really isn't a good idea, it'd be better to execute it without pkexec and using the --user flag. Another thing is that maybe it'd be better to just add the flathub repo as flathub instead of flathub-modren, since having two repos (assuming the user added flathub before) with two different names just makes stuff more complicated.

  • Add support for using EAPI-based package managers and Arch-based package managers

Add support for using EAPI-based package managers and Arch-based package managers

I use Gentoo Linux as my daily driver, but I used to use fedora. However, you have no support for the package manager I use, which is called Portage. Maybe go to the Gentoo Wiki to find out more about Portage. And maybe also include support for Arch Linux.

  • Use tauri instead of electron

    Use tauri instead of electron

Maybe it is a good idea now that it is starting to see the possibility of using tauri as a rendering engine, perhaps among the advantages it has I can highlight:

    • It is lighter than Electron (the binary usually weighs about 15mb maximum).
    • It generates a binary with all the necessary (binary, Appimage or .deb).
    • Written in Rust which can give us a good handling for the "back" part.
