Download and Installation

To begin using this template, choose one of the following options to get started:

Usage

Basic Usage

After downloading, simply edit the HTML and CSS files included with the template in your favorite text editor to make changes. These are the only files you need to worry about, you can ignore everything else! To preview the changes you make to the code, you can open the index.html file in your web browser.

Advanced Usage

After installation, run npm install and then run npm start which will open up a preview of the template in your default browser, watch for changes to core template files, and live reload the browser when changes are saved. You can view the gulpfile.js to see which tasks are included with the dev environment.

Gulp Tasks

  • gulp the default task that builds everything
  • gulp watch browserSync opens the project in your default browser and live reloads when changes are made
  • gulp css compiles SCSS files into CSS and minifies the compiled CSS
  • gulp js minifies the themes JS file
  • gulp vendor copies dependencies from node_modules to the vendor directory

You must have npm installed globally in order to use this build environment.

    Beautiful template, thanks. I've followed the directions under Advanced Usage and am ready to deploy the site, but the total size of my working directory is 381 MB.

    Is there a build script I can/should run that would essentially copy just the required files to a production server? In my case, I want to drop this page into an existing Django app. I'm a bit new to npm & gulp.

    Thanks!

  • concat JS and CSS to improve initial page load speed

    concat JS and CSS to improve initial page load speed

    The thorough gulp file is highly appreciated this page does very well once caching and gzipping is enabled:

    https://developers.google.com/speed/pagespeed/insights/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fblackrockdigital.github.io%2Fstartbootstrap-new-age%2F

    https://tools.pingdom.com/#!/ddPX9I/https://blackrockdigital.github.io/startbootstrap-new-age/

    Could it make sense to add a final concat step that puts the template-specific and vendor files into one .js file and one .css file? Or at least those included above the fold?

    screen shot 2018-05-18 at 22 41 53

    For one thing, gzip is not efficient for files below 1KB, so on Firebase for example none of these small files are gzipped.

  • Improvement for gh-pages compatibility

    Improvement for gh-pages compatibility

    Since 2nd November 2016, gh-pages with running jekyll blog are per default ignoring vendor and node_modules folders (see https://github.com/blog/2277-what-s-new-in-github-pages-with-jekyll-3-3 ). So it's good to update the gulp inject task and name the folder something like lib. I'll create a PR when I have some time.

    Release notes

    Sourced from ws's releases.

    7.4.6

    Bug fixes

    • Fixed a ReDoS vulnerability (00c425ec).

    A specially crafted value of the Sec-Websocket-Protocol header could be used to significantly slow down a ws server.

    for (const length of [1000, 2000, 4000, 8000, 16000, 32000]) {
      const value = 'b' + ' '.repeat(length) + 'x';
      const start = process.hrtime.bigint();

    value.trim().split(/ *, */);

    const end = process.hrtime.bigint();

    console.log('length = %d, time = %f ns', length, end - start); }

    The vulnerability was responsibly disclosed along with a fix in private by Robert McLaughlin from University of California, Santa Barbara.

    In vulnerable versions of ws, the issue can be mitigated by reducing the maximum allowed length of the request headers using the --max-http-header-size=size and/or the maxHeaderSize options.

    Bump engine.io and socket.io

    Bumps engine.io and socket.io. These dependencies needed to be updated together. Updates engine.io from 6.1.3 to 6.2.1

    Release notes

    Sourced from engine.io's releases.

    6.2.1

    :warning: This release contains an important security fix :warning:

    A malicious client could send a specially crafted HTTP request, triggering an uncaught exception and killing the Node.js process:

    Error: read ECONNRESET
        at TCP.onStreamRead (internal/stream_base_commons.js:209:20)
    Emitted 'error' event on Socket instance at:
        at emitErrorNT (internal/streams/destroy.js:106:8)

        at processTicksAndRejections (internal/process/task_queues.js:80:21) {
      errno: -104,
      code: 'ECONNRESET',
      syscall: 'read'
    }

    Please upgrade as soon as possible.

    Bug Fixes

    • catch errors when destroying invalid upgrades (#658) (425e833)

    6.2.0

    Features

    • add the "maxPayload" field in the handshake details (088dcb4)

    So that clients in HTTP long-polling can decide how many packets they have to send to stay under the maxHttpBufferSize value.

    This is a backward compatible change which should not mandate a new major revision of the protocol (we stay in v4), as we only add a field in the JSON-encoded handshake data:

    0{"sid":"lv_VI97HAXpY6yYWAAAC","upgrades":["websocket"],"pingInterval":25000,"pingTimeout":5000,"maxPayload":1000000}

    Icon gradients not working on Safari, not showing

    Safari has an issue with color: transparent; and webkit-background-clip since way back. https://stackoverflow.com/questions/31289537/webkit-text-fill-color-transparent-not-working-in-safari-7-1-7

    While it applies to text ok now, it does not apply to the bootstrap icon.
