Overview

Lava-Lamp

Description: A JavaScript animation plugin for menus. It creates a div that moves when you mouse over an element, giving it an elastic animation.

Author: Richard Hung

How to install

Link Files

Lava Lamp has a .js and .css file. All its animations are done with CSS3 transitions, so you can use or modify the advanced transition-timing-function to create custom easing.

Create HTML

Create a container for the slider and children for the panels. Remember to add a default active element.

Home

About

Services

Programs

Contact

Call the plugin

Call the lava lamp plugin after the HTML markup.

const settings = {
    margins: true,
};
const element = document.getElementById("navlist");
const lavalampInstance = new Lavalamp(element, settings);

Style it

The plugin creates a div with the lavalamp__object class in the container. This object stretches with the width and height of the element that you're hovering over.

.lavalamp__object {
    box-shadow: 0 0 5px 0 #999 inset;
}

  • Global scope

    Global scope

    Hi! You have the following code:

    enter = function() { ...
    ...
    leave = function() {...

    I think exposing enter and leave functions to the global scope is not required. I tried just to add var before them and it seems everything still works fine.

    What if we enable it on focus as well?

    Hello @Richard1320! I was using your script today and I noticed that we aren't enabling it on focus, just on hover, so I checked out the code and came here just to discuss with you what you think about it. Do you agree? Would it be an improvement? If won't have time to do that just let me know, maybe I can help you with that and make you a PR sometime soon, since I am the one who's asking you this. Best wishes to you and thanks for the project. Bye!

  • Can't get 'update' method to work with BS ScrollSpy

    Can't get 'update' method to work with BS ScrollSpy

    Hello, thanks for the amazing library, I've been using it on many projects :)

    I'm working on a single page website with a sticky menu, and I'm using Bootstrap 4's ScrollSpy which adds the '.active' class to the menu item related to the currently visible section.

    I can use $(window).on('activate.bs.scrollspy') to trigger a callback once ScrollSpy has added the '.active' class to the currently visible section.

    I'm hoping to have the lavalamp-object to follow the .active class on the menu as the user scrolls through the page, so here is my code, pretty simple:

    HTML:

    	   A

    	   B

    	   C

    	   D

    JS:

    	$('#main-menu').lavalamp({
    		activeObj: '.lava-active'
    	});

    	$(window).on('activate.bs.scrollspy', function () {

    		$('#main-menu li.lava-active').removeClass('lava-active');
    		$('#main-menu li .active').parent().addClass('lava-active');

    		$('#main-menu').lavalamp('update');

    	});

    I think the flow here should be pretty straight forward but for the love of me I can't get Lavalamp to update. I've also tried with autoUpdate: true but still no luck. The lava-active class is being correctly assigned/removed to the li elements.

    If I use this code it kinda works but the lavalamp-object obviously starts from the far left every time and it's also very bad practice performance-wise:

    	$(window).on('activate.bs.scrollspy', function () {

    		$('#main-menu').lavalamp();

    	});

    Any help would be highly appreciated :)

    Thank you very much!

  • LL and LESS

    LL and LESS

    Because LL is ready before LESS has finished rendering the page, the lavalamp-object is often out of place. Here’s the solution i placed in a later JS file: if(less||false){ less.pageLoadFinished.then(function(){ $('.lavalamp .active').mouseover() }) }

    On touch screen devices (iPad ios 5 and ios7) i have to click twice on a navigation item to change the page. The animation works correctly. I've set 'setOnClick: true'

    1.13.5 / 2022-05-04

    Security

    Dependencies

    • [CRuby] Vendored libxml2 is updated from v2.9.13 to v2.9.14.

    Improvements

    • [CRuby] The libxml2 HTML4 parser no longer exhibits quadratic behavior when recovering some broken markup related to start-of-tag and bare < characters.

    Changed

    • [CRuby] The libxml2 HTML4 parser in v2.9.14 recovers from some broken markup differently. Notably, the XML CDATA escape sequence and incorrectly-opened comments will result in HTML text nodes starting with <! instead of skipping the invalid tag. This behavior is a direct result of the quadratic-behavior fix noted above. The behavior of downstream sanitizers relying on this behavior will also change. Some tests describing the changed behavior are in test/html4/test_comments.rb.

    Security

    [JRuby] Address CVE-2021-41098 (GHSA-2rr5-8q37-2w7h).

    In Nokogiri v1.12.4 and earlier, on JRuby only, the SAX parsers resolve external entities (XXE) by default. This fix turns off entity-resolution-by-default in the JRuby SAX parsers to match the CRuby SAX parsers' behavior.

    1.12.4 / 2021-08-29

    Notable fix: Namespace inheritance

    Namespace behavior when reparenting nodes has historically been poorly specified and the behavior diverged between CRuby and JRuby. As a result, making this behavior consistent in v1.12.0 introduced a breaking change.

    This patch release reverts the Builder behavior present in v1.12.0..v1.12.3 but keeps the Document behavior. This release also introduces a Document attribute to allow affected users to easily change this behavior for their legacy code without invasive changes.

    Compensating Feature in XML::Document

    This release of Nokogiri introduces a new Document boolean attribute, namespace_inheritance, which controls whether children should inherit a namespace when they are reparented. Nokogiri::XML:Document defaults this attribute to false meaning "do not inherit," thereby making explicit the behavior change introduced in v1.12.0.

    CRuby users who desire the pre-v1.12.0 behavior may set document.namespace_inheritance = true before reparenting nodes.

    See https://nokogiri.org/rdoc/Nokogiri/XML/Document.html#namespace_inheritance-instance_method for example usage.

    • [CRuby] Document#to_xhtml properly serializes self-closing tags in libxml > 2.9.10. A behavior change introduced in libxml 2.9.11 resulted in emitting start and and tags (e.g.,

) instead of a self-closing tag (e.g.,
) in previous Nokogiri versions. [#2324]

    Compensating Feature in XML::Document

    Fix for XML::Builder

    However, recognizing that we want Builder-created children to inherit namespaces, Builder now will set namespace_inheritance=true on the underlying document for both JRuby and CRuby. This means that, on CRuby, the pre-v1.12.0 behavior is restored.

    Users who want to turn this behavior off may pass a keyword argument to the Builder constructor like so:

    Nokogiri::XML::Builder.new(namespace_inheritance: false)

    See https://nokogiri.org/rdoc/Nokogiri/XML/Builder.html#label-Namespace+inheritance for example usage.

    Downstream gem maintainers

    Note that any downstream gems may want to specifically omit Nokogiri v1.12.0--v1.12.3 from their dependency specification if they rely on child namespace inheritance:

  • zIndex

    zIndex

    The items.addClass('lavalamp-item').css({ zIndex ..}) was causing problems for me. I imagine this could cause problems for others. I tried shifting my other z-indexes around so I wouldn’t have the change the JS; but then the behavior of ‘lavalamp-object’ became erratic. I ended up removing items.addClass('lavalamp-item').css in the 2 places all together.

    My setup was ‘menu > li > a’ and I have ‘lavalamp- object’ over ‘li’ under ‘a’ and it looks really nice. Feature request 1: an option to turn off 'lavalamp-item' css Feature request 2: delay before return.

  • component not working as desired

    component not working as desired

    Hi,

    We are using this component on my website for few months now. But yesterday we came across 2 issues, they are listed below:

    1. When we toggle the tabs, and check the Console on firebug. We can see an error, but functionality wise it works fine:

    TypeError: destination.position(...) is null

    ... h=destination.outerHeight(margins);var t=destination.position().top || 0;var l=...

    1. This is a major issue: When we click on the tabs a hash (#) gets appended on the url. Now if we navigate to any other page and click back button, page loads with that hash (#) already in place in the url. And then tabs stops working. Infact if # is already there in the URL, tabs stop working completely.

    You can find both the error on our website page: http://www.researchaffiliates.com/Our%20Firm/Our%20Team/Pages/ourteam.aspx#

    Can you please provide us a solution ASAP.

  • Lavalamp not updating on scroll

    Lavalamp not updating on scroll

    Hi,

    I am trying to get the lavalamp effect to update as the page scrolls into different sections. I have the 'active' class changing on each li element as the page scrolls using the code below. But for some reason the lavalamp plugin isn't updating it's position.

    var sections = $('.menu-update'),

            links = $('#menu-main li');

            $(window).scroll(function() {

                var currentPosition = $(this).scrollTop();

                sections.each(function() {

                    var top = $(this).offset().top,

                        bottom = top + $(this).height();

                    if (currentPosition >= top && currentPosition <= bottom) {

                        links.removeClass('active');

                        $('a[href="#' + this.id + '"]').parent().addClass('active');

                    }

                });

            });

    Is there a way to force lavalamp to update? Maybe something like

    $('#menu-main').lavalamp('update');

    Thanks!
