πŸŒ€ The Javacript framework for creating a portal to your data. Perfect for a single dataset or a full catalog.

Overview

πŸŒ€ Portal.JS
The javascript framework for
data portals

πŸŒ€ portal is a framework for rapidly building rich data portal frontends using a modern frontend approach. portal can be used to present a single dataset or build a full-scale data catalog/portal.

portal is built in Javascript and React on top of the popular Next.js framework. portal assumes a "decoupled" approach where the frontend is a separate service from the backend and interacts with backend(s) via an API. It can be used with any backend and has out of the box support for CKAN.

Features

  • πŸ—ΊοΈ Unified sites: present data and content in one seamless site, pulling datasets from a DMS (e.g. CKAN) and content from a CMS (e.g. wordpress) with a common internal API.
  • πŸ‘©β€πŸ’» Developer friendly: built with familiar frontend tech Javascript, React etc
  • πŸ”‹ Batteries included: Full set of portal components out of the box e.g. catalog search, dataset showcase, blog etc.
  • 🎨 Easy to theme and customize: installable themes, use standard CSS and React+CSS tooling. Add new routes quickly.
  • 🧱 Extensible: quickly extend and develop/import your own React components
  • πŸ“ Well documented: full set of documentation plus the documentation of NextJS and Apollo.

For developers

  • πŸ— Build with modern, familiar frontend tech such as Javascript and React.
  • πŸš€ NextJS framework: so everything in NextJS for free React, SSR, static site generation, huge number of examples and integrations etc.
    • SSR => unlimited number of pages, SEO etc whilst still using React.
    • Static Site Generation (SSG) (good for small sites) => ultra-simple deployment, great performance and lighthouse scores etc
  • πŸ“‹ Typescript support

Getting Started

Setup

Install a recent version of Node. You'll need Node 10.13 or later.

Install yarn.

Try out the demo portal

Create a demo portal (for a single dataset):

npx create next-app -e https://github.com/datopian/portal.js/tree/main/examples/dataset-frictionless
# choose a name for your portal when prompted e.g. your-portal or go with default my-app

# then run it
cd your-portal
yarn #install packages
yarn dev #start app in dev mode

You should see the demo portal running.

You can try it out with other Frictionless datasets.

Check out more of the examples

The examples directory is regularly updated with different portal examples.

Deploying portal build to github pages

Appendix: What happened to Recline?

Portal.JS used to be Recline(JS). If you are looking for the old Recline codebase it still exists: see the recline branch. If you want context for the rename see this issue.

Upgrade to SlickGrid 2.2 (so we can use plugins) and remove all traces of 2.0.1 (was: Uncaught TypeError: Cannot read property 'LongText' of undefined)

    Hi,

I am attempting to use the recline.js SlickGrid demo on my page, but I keep getting the following error in my console:

    capture

Google and looking around at other issues haven't been helpful, so I must surmise I'm doing something wrong... and it's probably incredibly simple. I'm just a bit stumped.

Any tips on how to resolve this?

  • New grid view based on SlickGrid

New grid view based on SlickGrid

We want to explore using an established grid library for the Grid View. We decided to go along with SlickGrid and also focus on simplifying the design and the number of features.

The must-have features we need are:

    • Nicely rendered header and cells
    • Horizontal and vertical overflow
    • Fixed headers
    • Sorting
    • Column reordering
    • Hide columns
    • React to changes in the model (of course)

I've put together a prototype that covers most of this points:

    http://amercader.github.com/recline/app/?url=demo#explorer

Hide columns is not yet implemented, my idea was to use context menus (they could also provide the "Delete row" link if necessary).

There are still some issues with the border on the left, which I haven't managed to restrict to the cells.

All in all, it looks very promising.

The code is in a branch of my fork:

    Updating Extensions

Greetings, I am beginning to develop a fork of timemapper, and I feel like this first step is to get the libraries up to date. Is there anyone working on Recline actively enough that you could update leaflet and timelineJS to their most recent versions? Or possibly to add an alternative extension with timelineJS3 and leaflet Beta1? Thanks for your amazing work so far!

  • [discuss] Proper support for making changes to the data

[discuss] Proper support for making changes to the data

We'll focus on only support this in memory backend for the present but other backend may support this later.

    Proposal

We have rudimentary support for this in model.Dataset and no support in memory backend (or other backends atm).

Our approach has been to aggregate changes onto a changes attribute that looks like this:

    {
      creates: [ record.toJSON(), record.toJSON(), ... ]
      updates: [ ... ]
      deletes: [ ... ]
    }

And then call save() on backend with this changes object. (This follows the push model adopted generally for backends which we don't want to require to be "backbone-aware")

    Various issues with current approach:

    • No exemplar implementation on memory backend
    • Not clear how this would support inserts of new rows not at end of the
    • Order of operations matter (if we suppose that multiple operations may be saved)
    • Not clear how operations work reliably in absence of a unique id present in backend records and on Backbone record (e.g. how does delete work - how do we identify the record being deleted?)
    • Should we bother with this approach where we serialize to "changes" and then push to save - could just provide exemplar implementation and leave client users to deal with saving to their specific backend ...

  • Dataset Load Speed

    Dataset Load Speed

Client-side optimization is not my area of expertise, but I'm noticing that page load can take 100 seconds or more with large amounts of data being fed from a backend. Here's an example using the gdocs backend to load ~15k records.

As intended, the functions are fairly smooth once recline finishes pulling and parsing (although leaflet vacuums memory if markercluster isn't active). It's the initial load that seems suboptimal.

MultiView with ViewGrid doesn't render Leaflet Map

Hi, I try to change demo source code replacing SlickGrid with editable ViewGrid but Map view doesn't render. The problem seems to be in view.multiview.js (line 251: view.view.el.show();) that doesn't load initial map tiles. The div with class "panel map" appears to be blank.

Is there an issue about compatibility with ViewGrid?

    Thanks in advance,cheers, Raffaele.
